Devon

if Drums is the question,

he’s the answer!

Devon van Rooyen

Like a lot of kids, Devon started his musical journey playing the recorder at the age of 9 but, unlike a lot of kids, he didn’t stop there! Pretty soon he was playing Flute, Piano and the Steel Pans well enough to be included in both his school’s ensemble and steel band. It was with the steel band that he got his first International performance opportunity when they were invited to play at the 2002 Notting Hill Carnival in London, UK.

Devon started playing the drums at the age of 14, shortly after entering high school, and quickly fell in love with the instrument. One of the highlights of his school years was playing in the school big band and, towards the end of high school, he also started playing drums/percussion for Theatre productions like Guys and Dolls, Thoroughly Modern Millie and Copacabana, as well as Orchestral concerts with the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra.

Devon obtained his Trinity LTCL (Licentiate of Trinity College London) on Drum Kit in 2010.

In his hometown of Port Elizabeth, South Africa, Devon was always a regular performer. Whether it was a jazz gig with The J-Walkers Jazz Band or The John Edwards Trio or a tribute show for the entertainment Company, ‘Centrestage’, he was always an in-demand player.

Devon taught music (specifically Drums/Percussion, Marimba, Steel Pans and Flute) at Greenwood Primary School in Port Elizabeth for 12 years before moving to Hong Kong in early 2018. He also taught drums on a part-time basis at Grey High School, assisted several drum students at Nelson Mandela University and has had numerous private students over the past few years.

In his teaching, Devon caters to the individual needs of the student. If your goal is Trinity or ABRSM grade exams then he will focus on reading and understanding drum music, various theory aspects as well as technique. Devon has a lot of experience in preparing and entering students for exams. If, however, you prefer to play drums more as an enjoyable hobby then his lessons will be designed in that way. Above all, he wants you to have fun as you learn & play and to help you appreciate the music and musicians in the world around you.
