Swinging Sam

the Jazz man!

Samuel Chan

Samuel graduated from Hong Kong Education University (aka former HKIed) as the first jazz major student in the programme under the guidance of local jazz guru Ted Lo.

After graduating from HKEdU, he earned a merit Scholarship to attend the prestigious Drummers Collective in New York City where he studied with World Class drummers like Ian Froman, Chris Coleman, Peter Retzlaff and Kendrick Scott. He has performed and recorded with New York Musicians like Theo Hill, Isamu McGregor, Sean Conly, Sebastian Noelle, Ole Mathisen.

Sam came back to Hong Kong in 2016 and quickly plugged back into the live music scene. He’s gradually becoming a fixture in the jazz venues around town and can regularly be seen in places like Peel Fresco and The Fringe Club swinging hard! He currently splits his time between performing, teaching and music producing.

His approach to teaching is very much about giving the students the skills and techniques they need to express themselves clearly on the instrument. Skills like reading music and specific techniques are important but not the main goal. The main goal is always Music.
