Experience, Versatility & Celtic Charm

Yvonne brings it!

Yvonne Barrie

Yvonne is a vocalist and teacher who hails originally from Glasgow, Scotland. As early as her primary school days she knew that the only path for her would be a musical one, and began studying clarinet and piano, going on to become a member of the Scottish National Orchestra Youth Chorus and Glasgow City Orchestras.

As well as the excitement and camaraderie of working and performing with large ensembles, these groups gave Yvonne her first taste of International travel with performances at musical festivals such as Salzburg, Munich and Edinburgh. She later qualified with diplomas in classical clarinet, a BA (Hons) degree in jazz vocal performance and composition, and later, a P.G.C.E. in Secondary Music from Manchester University. Whilst living in the UK, Yvonne performed with soul, pop and jazz ensembles and taught classroom music and vocal studies in primary, secondary, and further education colleges, for many years.

In 2012 she moved to Seoul, South Korea, with her saxophonist husband Bruce, to teach music at Dulwich College. Two years later Hong Kong called, and in 2014 Yvonne moved to take up another International teaching post at an ESF school, where she led various choirs, orchestras and other musical ensembles, whilst also teaching drumming, music technology and theory.

Since arriving in Hong Kong, Yvonne has also been appearing with her own jazz group, the YBQ, at venues around the city, such as Peel Fresco and the FCC. She performs regularly at both corporate events for companies such as China Telecom, and private functions such as weddings. Yvonne also works with clients through Team-building Asia, coaching in choral singing and performance skills. She continues to have a passion for Arts Education and teaches vocal/instrumental studies to students ranging from 5 years to adult.

Yvonne is experienced in preparing students for Rockschool and Trinity singing examinations, and has in depth knowledge of the requirements for GCSE and IB music.  She is equally happy to teach those students who wish to sing for pleasure, relaxation or confidence building and personal fulfillment. Whether she is teaching ukulele to a small group, or working with a children’s choir, Yvonne has a patient, friendly and fun-based approach which often incorporates musical games, movement and downright silliness!
