Originally from Edmonton, Canada, Michael began his musical journey like many do, with piano before sinking his teeth into the guitar at age 14. He went on to study guitar and composition with respected Canadian musicians, including Kurt Walther (founding member of The Angstones) and classical guitarist Patrick Roux (founder of the Canadian Guitar Quartet). At the University of Ottawa, he specialised in orchestral and chamber music theory, as well as composition for his B.Mus.
Now based in Hong Kong for nearly 20 years, Michael is an experienced guitar/music teacher and active musician. He has taught students of all ages and levels privately, and has led guitar ensembles, folk song choirs, and general music classes in local government schools.
With Michael, children or adults can explore the areas of music that interest them most. He specialises in finger-style guitar (folk, acoustic, classical, blues and contemporary) as well as rock and electric guitar using a flat pick. Lessons cover music from classical to modern pop and rock, music theory at any level, and music technology — including creating music on iPad, laptop recording, professional production software, and mixing for broadcast. Ukulele and beginner banjo are available as well.
Whether your child wants to build strong technique, play the songs they love, write music, or gain confidence performing, Michael brings patience, expertise, and a broad range of real-world experience to every lesson.
